Brigitte Woloszyn, Intercultural Student Experiences (ISE) Language Matters Award

Recently retired from teaching German at R.J. Reynolds H. S. and Career Center HS in Winston-Salem. Creative programming and a talent for organizing colleagues and students are just some of her many accomplishments. In her years of valued service to the German teaching profession, she has organized a GAPP exchange with Rotenburg am Neckar, celebrated German festivals and holidays with her school’s German Club, all while building a program from two to four levels and teaching levels 1 through AP at two schools. One student spoke of her enthusiasm, kindness, engaging teaching methods, and exceptional knowledge of the language and culture. In her German classes, “There were no stand-outs, no competition. Just this shared sense of wanting to, and being able to, and doing.”

I would add: The long tradition of German Immersion Weekend for middle and high school students exists because of Brigitte’s willingness to organize, get students involved and sign silly songs with her guitar.

2015 Klett-Langenscheidt Award in recognition for outstanding teaching.

This year’s recognition will be awarded to Ms. Beth Gulewich who has a strong track record of successful teaching, including many students participating in the National German Exam
